About the Library

Strengthening our community through lifelong learning.
The beautiful McMillan Memorial Library provides educational resources and cultural programming for the Wisconsin Rapids area. We aim to provide our community with a suburban style library in a small town setting. The Library's collection of over 120,000 books, magazines, audiobooks, music recordings and video recordings is supplemented by an additional three million library holdings of other members of the South Central Library System. South Central Library System holdings may be reserved on the Library's on-line catalog. The Library also provides significant on-line resources, including ebooks, magazine collections, car repair manualsConsumer Reports, and BookPage

McMillan is the municipal library for City of Wisconsin Rapids, which provides the bulk of its funding. The Library serves all residents of Wood County and significant funding is provided by Wood County.

Wireless Internet access is provided throughout the Library. Internet access is also available on desktop PCs. These stations have word processing/MS Office, color printing and scanners. Call to reserve any workstation.

McMillan Library is a national leader among public libraries offering special programming and exhibitions for all ages. In recognition of this, McMillan was named a finalist in 2019 for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Special events happen year round at the library. The Library's Adult Concert Series, Library Commons, film series and browser oriented collection are in keeping with the public library's oldest traditions, but also in the forefront of progressive librarianship. A photo tour of the library is available.

The Youth Services area was extensively remodeled in 2014, including a new Children's Garden. The garden includes a Monarch Waystation, comfortable seating and a woodland planting area. The Youth Services area incorporates many concepts borrowed from children's museum. There are drop in activities and learning stations.

The Studio @ McMillan has a wealth of creative equipment, including a recording studio. The equipment list and programming is constantly changing, so check our calendar and website.

The Fine Arts Center is a 248 seat theater, with stage lights, sound board, wireless microphone, projection equipment and a piano. It is used for movies, concerts and other presentations and performances.

The Library was founded in 1890 and was formerly the T.B. Scott Public Library. Information about the history of the Library and its previous locations is located elsewhere on the website.
